Services Provided
Appointments Most appointments are made in the mornings so that, if surgery is needed, it can be done the same afternoon. Overnight care is available, but most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis. Call to book an appointment: (614) 889-9555 or Contact UsBefore You Leave Home
Once an appointment has been made, there are two things to do:
- Obtain copies of any radiographs, lab work, or previous treatments and current medications from your primary care veterinarian. Most veterinarians can email such material to orthovetvt2@gmail.com. Also have your veterinarian send you a copy on your smartphone. It is not a problem if these are unavailable; bring what you have. This will reduce duplication of effort and expense.
- Withhold food after midnight the evening before the consultation. Water and prescription medications are to be given routinely. Thus, if surgery is done following the consultation, anesthesia will be safer.
What to Expect at the Consultation
The role of the orthopedist today is to determine the cause of lameness and offer advice for its treatment. Solutions may require medication, splints, exercise modification, or surgery. Surgery is not always needed, but if it is, be assured that it is usually safe and effective.
You will meet Dr. Harrison. He will do an orthopedic evaluation, review prior x-rays, and develop a personalized treatment plan. He will explain the diagnosis in detail. If surgery is recommended, he will explain the procedure, expected outcomes, and recovery steps. There is no obligation on your part to accept his recommendation. Dr. Harrison will give you the names of other orthopedic surgeons in the area if you desire a second opinion. There is no charge for the consultation. There may be a reasonable fee for additional x-rays. If surgery is needed, fees will be discussed.
